What Could My Bloating Be Telling Me?

I share the perspective that the body is our friend. When we experience physical discomfort or chronic symptoms, it’s the body communicating to get our attention. The question becomes, can we hear the message and connect the dots?

The gut is the home to many vital functions of the body. It’s where we absorb nutrients from the foods we eat and supplements we take. It’s where we eliminate waste and clear toxins. It’s our profound connection to nature from the inside through our own unique ecosystem and plays a key role in our immune function.

When there is an imbalance in gut health, there are a myriad of symptoms one can experience, such as bloating. Bloating is the sensation of a swollen or distended belly, that often occurs after meals though can also happen throughout the day.

Some of the potential upstream causes of bloating include:

  • Reduced digestive power and function

  • Imbalances in the microbiome—such as an overgrowth of bacteria, yeast, or parasites

  • Impaired gut motility

  • Low stomach acid

  • Food sensitivities or intolerances

  • Histamine intolerance

  • Hormonal imbalance

  • Living out of alignment

The cause for each person is unique to their body's journey and requires a deep listening. Often a comprehensive stool test can be a valuable tool in uncovering what the body is communicating.

The more we learn to listen and honor the signals of the body, the more empowered we become in our journey of wellness.
