Meditation: The Practice of Returning

Meditation is often imagined as a practice of becoming perfectly still, quieting the mind, or reaching some peaceful state. Yet meditation is not about escaping our thoughts or doing it “right.” It is an opportunity to simply sit with ourselves—to notice the thoughts, emotions, sensations, and stories moving through us without needing to change them. Some days the mind may feel spacious and calm; other days it may feel restless, distracted, or full. Both are part of the practice.

There is no such thing as a bad meditation. A meditation filled with thoughts is not a failed meditation. Each time you notice that your mind has wandered and gently bring your attention back—to your breath, your body, a mantra, or the present moment—you are practicing. In many ways, meditation is a practice of meeting ourselves differently: becoming aware of the habitual patterns of the mind and choosing, again and again, where to place our attention. The wandering is not the problem; the returning is the practice.

Over time, those small moments of returning can begin to extend beyond meditation itself. We may become more aware of our reactions before acting on them, more present in our conversations, and more able to create a little space between what happens and how we respond. Meditation does not require perfection, a completely quiet mind, or even a particular experience. It simply asks us to show up. Five quiet minutes, one conscious breath, one gentle return at a time—each becomes an invitation to come home to ourselves.
